Silver cup presented to Davis on behalf of the State of Israel Bonds. Engraved silver cup measures 7.5? high, with relief Hebrew lettering around the bottom and a raised relief design on one side of the cup. Cup is housed in its original presentation box, 8.25 x 14.75 x 5, with an engraved silver plaque at the bottom which reads, “Presented to Sammy Davis, Jr.for outstanding achievement in creating better understanding among all men and inspiring support of Israel’s economic development and its hopes for peace and progress. San Francisco, June 21, 1972, State of Israel Bonds.” In very good to fine condition, with moderate tarnishing to cup and presentation plaque. The Development Corporation for Israel (Israel Bonds) was founded in 1951 to raise money from the American public for the fledgling Israeli state, which, at the time, was struggling to build an infrastructure and economy to support its growing population. The first Israel Bonds sales drive was launched in New York by David Ben-Gurion in 1951, and would raise 52.6 million dollars by the end of 1951. The funds raised by the sale of Israel Bonds in 1951 and in subsequent years and decades were key factors in establishing a sound Israeli economy. Davis was severely injured in a car accident in 1954, in which he lost his left eye. His friend Eddie Cantor discussed the similarities of the Jewish and African American cultures. Davis would formally convert to Judaism in 1961, and would become an ardent supporter of the country for the remainder of his life.
