Title is Two Guns White Calf. 20 1/4" by 24 3/8" framed. Selmer T. Sam Wiprud (1894-1964 Montana) Sam was my born in Minnesota shortly after his parents came from Norway, and lived most of his life in Montana. He met Olive when he was in his 40s he had not been married before. she was born in Canton, Miss, in 1900. She had been married to a traveling salesman, and she left him in Missoula. She found her way, through friends, to Swan Lake Montana and met Sam there. Both were artists. They started out making plaster figures in molds, painting them, and loading them in their car and selling them around the west. They moved for a while to Key West, then to LA, where they owned a store for a while, then to Morro Bay, Ca, and finally back to Montana in the late 40s where they remained the rest of their lives, painting primarily Native Americans They were quite well known in Montana in the 50's and early 60's, but have now almost completely faded from sight. Their most famous work is two life-sized paintings of Jesus and Mary as Indians. These are in a wonderful Jesuit mission in St. Ignatius, Montana. A small county museum, The Ravalli County Museum in Hamilton Montana, has a number of their works. the Ravalli County museum, while nice, is really a small town historical society Sam and Olive were made honorary members of the Salish tribe in about 1956. Olive died of a heart attack in 1958 and Sam died in 1964.
