Sam J. Glanzman - All-New Short Story Comics #3, Complete 6-page story "Why, Woeful Wilbert!" Original Art (Harvey, 1943). Woeful Wilbert is a sad-faced swabbie who's not happy until he has something to grouse or fret about. He's the Navy's version of Sad Sack or Willie and Joe. This early work by Sam Glanzman, who has signed the strip "Samuel Glanz," shows his fascination with Naval subjects, even at this early date. Glanzman would go on to create perhaps the finest war stories ever done, the autobiographical "U.S.S. Steven" World War II tales. Wilbert is done in a "bigfoot" humor style, except for the lovely native girls, who are rendered in luscious detail. This approach falls squarely into the cartooning tradition set by Roy Crane with his Wash Tubbs newspaper strip. The image area of each page is approximately 13" x 18". There is a paste-up art correction on panel three of page six, otherwise the art is in Excellent condition. Glanzman joined the Navy in December of 1942, a year after Pearl Harbor, and this may have been one of his last stories before he joined up. In any case it is a historic early Sam Glanzman Navy story sure to thrill all war comics fans.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
