Partly-printed DS, 8 x 4, March 15, 1861. Treasury warrant issued to Texas Ranger Captain L. S. Ross for one hundred dollars for “part pay as Captain Tex. Mounted Volunteers.” Signed on the reverse by Houston, and also endorsed on the reverse by Ross. Two diagonal ink cancellations to front, with show-through on reverse passing through Houston’s signature, Houston’s signature a shade or two light, but still legible, several vertical folds, scattered toning, creasing, and wrinkling, and a bit of paper loss to one edge, otherwise very good condition. During the previous year, Ross and his Rangers, together with members of the US cavalry, had fought the Battle of Pease River against the Comanches, during which Ross had ‘rescued’ Cynthia Ann Parker. The Robert Davis Collection.
