Sam Houston Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages with integral address leaf, 7.25" x 9.25", Morgantown, North Carolina, November 4, 1824. This letter was written to his cousin John H. Houston, discussing Andrew Jackson's possibility of being elected president in 1824, even naming several states who would likely vote him in. He begins: "I am thus far on my way to South Carolina. Say nothing of this thing to our friends in the city. I will write to you again from Cheraw. I do not know what will take place". The reason for young Houston's secrecy was that he was traveling to South Carolina to court a young lady and he wanted to avoid starting rumors. Marriage was very much on his mind at this time in his life but as a Tennessee congressman, politics were equally important. After the secretive beginning to his letter, Sam turns to political matters, stating: "Jackson will get this state, South Carolina, and all the other western states except Kentucky and I think he will get some votes there. Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama will surely be for him also. You can now judge what chance Old Hickory will stand to be our next President. My notion is that he will be elected". Houston was very involved in Jackson's 1824 bid for the Presidency and spent a great deal of time campaigning for "Old Hickory". Unfortunately, despite his hopeful predictions, Jackson lost in 1824 to John Quincy Adams. Wonderful political content! In fine condition; light overall soiling and toning; usual folds are present; small stain on page one.
