Sam Glanzman - Original Cover Art for Saigon Chronicles #1 (ACG, 1998). Universally regarded as one of the greatest war comics artists ever to hold a brush, Sam Glanzman has had a career in comics that spans more than six decades. Originally published under several pseudonyms for such houses as Centaur and Harvey before his induction into the service during WWII, Glanzman also worked for Dell, Charlton, and Gilberton starting in the late 1950s. It was in 1970, however, when he took his first assignment from editor Joe Kubert at DC, that he really hit his stride. His "U.S.S. Stevens" series was an instant hit, and several years later, he took over the Haunted Tank feature in G.I. Combat from veteran Russ Heath, and began a run that would last for over 130 issues. The piece offered here is a later work, published as the cover for Saigon Stories in 1998. Perfectly capturing the despair and loneliness of the common G.I., this is a haunting image rendered entirely in pen and ink and shades of blue. In excellent condition, the piece measures approximately 11.5" x 17.5", and is signed by the artist in the lower right.
