Salvador Dali original ink sketch for the Hitchcock film Spellbound
(Selznick, 1945) Sketch of a woman descending a flight of stairs, accomplished in ink and aquatint on board, measuring approx. 7 1/2 in. x 12 in. Signed at the lower right, "Dali". The piece has a very interesting history. According to the biography "Selznick" (1970), "Hitchcock sought to avoid the blurred photography that marked most dream sequences in filMs. He convinced Selznick to hire Salvador Dali to create backgrounds in his sharply detailed style. Some of the Dali designs were used; others proved impractical. For one scene he wanted to have a statue disintegrate and become infested with ants; then Ingrid Bergman would be revealed underneath, also covered with ants. Selznick vetoed the idea." This original Dali sketch was created for the alternate "dream" sequence as Hitchcock desired. A wonderful piece of artwork with a fantastic association between Dali and Hitchcock. From the estate of Walter Plunkett. A similar Dali ink sketch recently sold at auction (Sotheby's) for over $30,000!
