Salt River Ticket- Steamer Know-Nothing
"Salt River" Ticket For Passage on the Steamer Know-Nothing. 3.5” x 2.25”, black ink on orange paper stock. The passage “up Salt River” was a quaint political turn of phrase adopted in the mid-19th century that indicated that a candidate for political office had lost or was in the process of losing his bid for office and was thus doomed for a trip “up Salt River”. There are many variations on the Salt River theme but tickets for passage up the river were quite popular to serve as jibes to the supporters of losing candidates. The ticket on offer is for passage aboard the steamer “Know-Nothing”. The steamer was “new but rotten and water-logged” and would carry many “extinguished” passengers. The political hopefuls doomed to crewing the ship bear the names Nicholson, Kern, Bolton and Small. Further research could certainly pinpoint the exact campaign these gentlemen were associated with. The ticket is still bright and in near fine condition.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
