Salt Lake,UT - no date - Native American Photograph :
The C. W. Carter Native American photo shows a robust Native American male model dressed in what whites think Native garb looked like in the era. None of the tribes native to Utah dressed in this fashion. Clad in only a loin cloth made of silk-like material and high top laced moccasins, this Native reposes on carpet and animal skins. The man does not look “savage” at all but concerned or worried as if he was supposed to be posing as someone who is fierce, but the gesture does not come across that way. Measures 4" by 6", mounted measures 4 1/4" x 6 1/2". The corners are good, the bottom right has a little wear. It's contrast and focus are great. There are some fingerprints on the back. As the 19th century came to a close, the American Native population was at its nadir. Recording Natives through photography, as well as by conducting ethnology and anthropology studies, came into fashion. However, this photo reflects nothing more than an artist's interpretation of Native life.
