Salt Lake,UT - c 1871 - Methodist Church Carte de Visite :
This Carter CDV rendering shows the initial First United Methodist Church building in Salt Lake City on East Third South Street. A Methodist preacher was invited to give a sermon in the Tabernacle in 1868 by Brigham Young. Although many Mormons’ mocked the sermon, Methodists saw a place in need of missionaries. Once Methodists heard the call, they came to Utah and settled all over the territory. While the Methodists did not make many converts, the religion’s biggest contribution to the state was building an educational system designed to educate all students in more than the basics, for longer than three months at a time, while trying to keep religion out of the classroom. Most noteworthy is that women missionaries did most of the teaching. Methodists supported a free public education system, and when that finally took hold, the Methodist educational system ended.
