Salt Lake,UT - c 1867-1896 - Lion House Carte de Visite :
This Carter CDV features Brigham Young’s residence in Salt Lake City on East South Temple Street. The house was built in 1856 to accommodate Young’s large, polygamous family. Called Lion House because of the lion statue atop the front entrance, also because Young was referred to as a “Lion of the Lord,” given the structure’s name a double meaning. Young died in the house in 1877. Lion House is now an open social center, a Mecca for locals and tourists alike, with a restaurant on the main floor containing additional rooms available for large parties. Viewers can see how new the city is by the small size of the trees lining it. This CDV has a small flaw in the treeline across the street from the Lion House.
