Empire Mining Company of Utah mining stock certificate dated November 16, 1880. Issued to Frederick Barforde for 10 shares of capital stock valued at $100 per share. At the time this stock was issued Empire Mining Company had stock valued at $10,000,000. In the lower left corner is a company seal of an axe, shovel, and sledgehammer. On the far side adjacent to the silver ornate border is a vertical countersignature & registration from the Framers Loan and Trust Company of New York. There is a large detailed vignette of four miners above the stock’s title. The bottom is signed by the Assistant Secretary and President G.L. Cornwall. Certificate measures 10 1/2” x 7”. The reverse has 3 assessment stamps dated March 4, 1881, October 24, 1881 and September 27, 1882. Each stamped is signed by a company official. The Empire Mining Company of Utah was incorporated in May, 1878 under the laws of Utah. The property comprised of fourteen locations south of Park City. The claim was discovered in 1871. The Clara Davis, was one of the largest locations and developed considerably. Operations came to halt in 1880 when the Utah Eastern Railroad became a priority. Very Good condition.
