"Salt Creek" - An imaginary river up which defeated political candidates are supposed to be sent. The phrase "to row up Salt River" had its origin from Salt River, or Salt Creek, a small winding stream in the state of Kentucky. Owing to the many bars and shallows by which it is characterized, it is difficult to row up the stream. This lot comprises: 1.) Satirical pro slavery printed oblong sheet with header "Price 5 Cents / Salt River Tickets." Below are seven tickets "Issued by / G.O.P. Underground R.R. / (All Steal Route)." Destinations, some derived from politician's names include: "Fiskeburgh," Morton City," Harrisonville," "Bandanna Cave," "Cleveland Grove," and others all leading eventually back to "Fiskeburgh". Bears antique manuscript annotations throughout. 3-3/4" W x 24" H. Age-toning with horizontal creases. 2.) Two printed 16mo tickets on orange cardstock mocking politicians Buchanan, Woodward, and Hopkins. 3.) Two pro slavery clipped 16mo sheets with disparaging Salt Creek cartoons. Condition varies all sold together as is.
