1886 - This is a group of 6 incredible documents that showed the abandonment of saloons and other businesses in Lander County, Nevada. The abandonment resulted from the decline of mining camps as the mines became exhausted. As a result of this ghost town effect, the county tax collector was compelled by law to send out what amounted to repossession notices on these properties. Those businesses hit with these collection notices include one to John Thompson, Lewis. According to the notice Mr. Thompson owes Lander County $200 on his businesses that included $75 worth of blacksmithing tools, a homestead and a city lot. Other notices went out to James Murphy for $150, the owner of the Stockdale Saloon in Cortez and an attachment of $215 on the property of H.E. Holland which consisted of three horses, a wagon, the building that housed the Frisbee post office, plus the downstairs residence and a house adjacent to Old Cardwell’s Saloon in Lewis. The dates of the documents range from 1885 to 1889 and they are in near new condition.
