Politician (1808–1873) who served as secretary of the treasury for the first three years of Abraham Lincoln's term, after which Lincoln appointed him chief justice of the Supreme Court. LS signed “S. P. Chase,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, Treasury Department letterhead, February 24, 1864. Letter to Charles James, collector in San Francisco. In part: “The following nominations of Temporary Inspectors submitted in your letter of the 23rd…to the Commissioners of Customs (but should have been addressed to the Secretary of the Treasury) has just been by him referred to this office and are hereby approved.” In very good condition, with irregular staining and overall blurriness to text, which is still entirely legible. Accompanied by an unsigned engraved portrait.
