Salmon P. Chase and Jefferson Davis: A Rare Political Hand-Bill Urging a Unity Presidential Ticket of These Two Prominent Figures. It urges the candidacies of Chase, a respected pro-Union public figure from Ohio, and Jefferson Davis of Mississippi, one of the South's most outspoken political leaders, for Vice-President. At the bottom are clasped hands and the slogan "United We Stand, Divided We Fall". The precise origin of this rare hand-bill has been a subject for conjecture. It might have been issued in 1860, prior to the dissolution of the Union, or it could have been a naively optimistic 1864 expression of hope that the two warring regions could resolve their differences in compromise. Whatever its origins, it is an appealing and intriguing artifact of the politics surrounding the Civil War. We can recall seeing only one other example, in the UI "Chick" Harris Collection, and recall that it made quite an impression on us at that time. Excellent condition. Measures 4.75" x 7.25".

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
