American politician (1808–1873) who served as secretary of the treasury for the first three years of Abraham Lincoln's term, after which Lincoln appointed him chief justice of the Supreme Court. In that role Chase presided over the 1868 impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson. ALS signed “S. P. Chase,” one page, 8 x 7.75, April 6, 1858. Handwritten letter to publisher D. Appleton & Company, in part: "Pardon my too long deferred acknowledgment of your attention in sending me a copy of the first volume of the New American Encyclopedia. The excellent reputations of the Editors for ability & industry is well sustained by the articles it contains,—no mere reproductions of other men's labors, but original & well considered accounts & discussions of their various subjects,—brief, necessarily, not yet as full and complete as the nature of such a work permits." Affixed to a slightly larger sheet and in very good to fine condition, with some show-through from adhesive on the reverse.
