<B>Salmon P. Chase 1864 Letter Signed As Secretary of the Treasury</B></I> “<I>S P Chase</B></I>”. Two pages, 8” x 10”, on Treasury Department letterhead, Washington , February 4, 1864, in ink, to Andrew James, Alexandria, Virginia. In this letter Salmon Chase (1808-1873) rules in the case of two steamers fined for either not having or having an expired boiler inspection. The steamers in question were the “Manhattan” and “Charlotte Vanderbilt”. Salmon dropped the fine on the former and referred the matter of the “Charlotte Vanderbilt” to the U.S. Attorney for action. Bound at the edge with the letter is a one page letter dated October 16, 1863 letter on Treasury Department letterhead and signed by acting Secretary of the Treasury L. S. Chittenden initiating the case of the steamers and referring the matter for consideration by the Secretary.
