Salish Gathering Basket, attributed to the Cowlitz, approx. 6''x5''x5'', ca. 1910 or earlier. Cedar root is coiled over a bundle foundation; the rim has a false braid. The designs are simple imbricated patterns that are woven in bear grass and a dark material that is likely horsetail root. Details of the weave include split stitches on the exterior. The single strip of ribbon beading at the base suggest Cowlitz weaving techniques. With appraisal from Anthropological Consultants, Sebastopol, CA, who state this basket was purchased by a F.S. Quick from the Hudson Bay Co. in Seattle in the 1920s-1930s. Although the tag attributes the basket to the Klikitat, the appraisal states, ''There is no weaving detail that is conclusively Klikitat and there is no evidence of braided basketry looops on the rim.'' Appraisal also states that condition is good with aboriginal use. Est.: $300-$500.
