a gathering of photographs and ephemera related to B.F. Smith, a Colorado miner. The heart of this collection are 10 spectacular boudoir photographs of the tiny mining town of Monarch and one of Garfield, Colorado, taken by C. H. Clark of Salida (ca 1886). Scenes include the shaft house and dump of the Eclipse mine; the works of the Madonna Mine; a close view of the Post Office and General Store; a fine birdseye of the town; two winter views of the Mason Mine and another; a mule train in the snow; and a fine image of miners at lunch. In addition to these boudoir photographs, the collection also includes a 5" x 7" albumen image mounted on larger board showing the town of Monarch with Smith's later notations, with an "x" marking his cabin. The lot further includes a 1925 pocket diary kept when Smith revisited his old haunts, with cryptic comments about his travels. A Michigander, the lot is rounded out with ca 25 family photographs. A fine collection, made by a scarce Colorado artist.
