Uncommon color 19.75 x 13.25 optical engraving entitled "Vue de Salem [reversed]," produced by the Imperial Academy from a circa 1750 copperplate engraving by German artist Balthasar Friedrich Leizelt. The engraving features a bustling Salem harbor with men loading and unloading goods and animals from moored vessels against a backdrop of clustered buildings. The lower portion features dual captions in German and French, and reads (translated): "A village of British America in the County of Essex, it was defeated by the English in 1629, and has two Ports, one for the summer, and the other for the Winter." The engraving is affixed along the top edge to a 22.5 x 18 cardstock mount. In very good to fine condition, with trimmed edges, and light staining and soiling to the borders.
