Salem, MA- Salem Bank $8 Nov. 1, 1809 C120A very scarce early Massachusetts odd denomination example, particularly scarce in this high a grade, but made even more interesting by the poignant letter which accompanies the note. Addressed to John Adam, Esq. of Canaan, CT., it details his brother's misfortune in accepting this note from Mr. Adams' son for hogs which were sold to a third party. "While at my house he Show me an Eight dollar Bill Wich I told him I did not think was a good one he tried to pass it but NoBody whanted to take it...he is very poor and for him to Loose 8 Dollars is a great deal." The plea apparently failed, as the note was not taken back by either Mr. Adams or the third party. 2 items Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
