Sale of a Slave. During period of Sherm
Sale of a Slave. During period of Sherman's March to the Sea. Bill of sale dated Apr. 7, 1864, for $300, "in full payment for a Negro Girl named Louise...." Written on verso, "3 Bushels of Peas, 300 Pounds of Lard left here." Signed by R.M. Willis, seller in Charleston, who has also signed on front. As slavery was coming to an end, the price of slaves was dropping, and here, payment was made with provisions. An unusual example of a slave trade in the next-to-last year of the Confederacy. Darkly penned. Very fine.
