American, early 19th century. Saint-Memin portraits of a lady and gentleman; charcoal on wove paper with pink background. In gilt frames with replaced eglomise glass; each 16" high x 13" wide (sight).

Charles Balthazar Julien Fevret De Saint-Memin (1770-1852), a French nobleman, came to New York in 1793, and began making portraits in 1796. With the help of the Physiognotrace, a mechanical device that allowed for the relatively easy creation of profile portraits, Saint-Memin produced hundreds of portraits in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and elsewhere on the east coast.

Condition: Laid down to cardstock, lady has foxing, man appears to be varnished.
