Claude Monet was born on November 14th, 1840 in Paris, France. In 1845, his family moved to La Havre, Normandy, where he first gained recognition as a successful caricaturist. Monet was taught ?en plein-air? or outdoor landscape painting by Eugene Boudin, who also introduced him to oils. Monet eventually moved back to Paris in 1859, where he soon met other future Impressionists Manet, Pissarro, and Renoir to name a few. Renoir and Monet began painting outdoors together, laying the foundations for the impressionist movement. In 1874, with Pissarro and Edgar Degas, Monet helped organize the Société Anonyme des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs, etc., the formal name of the Impressionists' group. Over time, Monet further developed his now famous technique for rendering atmospheric outdoor lighting by using broken and rhythmic brushstrokes. In 1890, he began creating paintings in series, depicting the same subject under various conditions and at different times of the day. Monet?s late pictures, made when he was half-blind, can be categorized as shimmering pools of color almost totally devoid of form. Monet died of lung cancer on December 5, 1926 at the age of 86.
