Sacramento,CA - c1930 - Delta King Steamboat Photograph :
A view of the Delta King steamer, most likey traveling on the Sacramento River. Photograph measures 9 1/2 x 7 1/2", with a white border and no matte or backing. The contrast is high and the focus is sharp. The "Delta King" flag, blowing in the wind, can be read atop the vessel. Aside from a creaseline in the upper right corner, the image is very fine. "McCurry Foto Co." printed on the lower right corner of the image. A traveling photographer, in Sacramento c1914 (Ref: Mautz). The photograph shows the Delta King moving along the river, whose banks have vegetation. "25158-B" is printed in white on the lower left corner of the image. The Delta King and her identical twin, the Delta Queen, were built between 1924 and 1927 in Scotland. Assembled at Banner Island shipyard in Stockton, the boats were completed in May, 1927. The boats ran the "Delta Route", the Sacramento - San Joaquin River Delta, giving them their names, for the California Transportation Company of San Francisco. The boats began regular service on June 1, 1927, replacing the steamers Fort Sutter and Capital City, and had their last regular runs on September 29, 1940, the closing day of the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island. The Delta King was used by the Navy as a receiving ship for naval reservists from 1940-41. In the fall of 1941 the boat returned to Stockton, but the California Transportation Company sold it to the Isbrandsten Steamship Co. of New York. The vessel was towed to the East Coast via Panama Canal for use on excursions on the Hudson river. Pearl Harbor brought the Delta King back into Naval service as an emergency hospital transport. It was first classified as a Yard House Boat (YHB-6) and then as a Yard Ferry Boats (YFB-55). In 1946 the boat went into lay-up at the Reserve Fleet on Suisun Bay, called the "mothball fleet". The Delta King was off the Navy records on April 17, 1946. After a variety of duties, including getting re-floated twice, the King returned to Sacramento, where she arrived in July 1984. Following a restoration and grand opening on May 20, 1989, the Delta King serves as a hotel, theater, and restaurant at the Old Sacramento waterfront (Ref: steamboats.org).
