Sacramento,CA - c1885 - Oregon Express Train Photograph :
A view of Oregon Express Train Engine No. 94 at the C.P. Depot in Sacramento, California. Photograph measures 8 1/4 x 6" with rounded corners on top. Mounted on beige cardstock measuring 12 x 10". Contrast is medium to high and focus is sharp. "General Pacific Railroad" sign can be read on the front of the depot over the first car. Some discoloration noted along edge of mounting stock with only several small spots noted on image. "O.V. Lange, Photo." is printed on the bottom of the cardstock. Lange was a San Francisco photographer who specialized in architecture, landscape, and mining. He worked with E. Newth producing stereoviews from 1868-78 and had galleries at 1023 1/2 Market St. in 1883, 1025 Market St. from 1885-86, 26 Montgomery St. in 1887, and 109 Montgomery St. by 1895 while in business with T.P. Andrews (Andrews & Lange). The photograph shows the engine, supply car with wood piled high for the engine, and the first passenger car outside of the depot. Engineers can be seen in the window and standing at the rear of the engine. A group of about 20 men are standing around the front of the depot and the first passenger car. Several horse drawn carriages are parked to the left of the depot. The Central Pacific Railroad Depot opened in 1879, replacing the first depot located on Front Street on land reclaimed from Sutter Slough. It was torn down and replaced by the current depot in 1925 (Ref: Sacramento Archives and Museum Collection Center, Historic Old Sacramento Foundation).
