Sacramento,CA - 1893 - Directors of People's Savings Bank Photograph :
The caption under the photograph reads: "Directors of People's Savings Bank, of Sacramento, Cal, 1893." The photograph measures 19 1/2 x 15", mounted on a pale green backing with a white matte. Mounted in a period frame with carved oak leaf border measures 30 1/2 x 28 1/2". The contrast is medium and the focus is good. There appears to be some fading of the image and some discoloration of the matte, otherwise very fine. No photographer is identified. The eight men pictured, four sitting and four standing, are gathered around a table in the center of the room. Six of the men have full beards, two are clean-shaven, while the man standing directly behind the table appears to be quite young compared to his compatriots. One of those likely pictured is William Beckman, who established the People's Savings Bank of Sacramento in 1879 and was elected its president. While running the institution he made it one of the safest, most reliable financial institutions in the west. It was strictly a savings bank, had large deposits, and the business became profitable. Generally managed in a conservative fashion, Mr. Beckman was considered a capable and trustworthy financier in northern California (Ref: usgennet.org). Another man possibly included in the photograph is William Johnston, who moved to California in 1849 to seek his fortune in the gold fields. After a year working in the El Dorado mines he purchased the land and built his Rosebud Ranch. His success in agriculture made him a community leader, and he helped to organize the People's Bank of Sacramento, where he held the offices of director and vice-president. The bank, first located on the corner of 4th and J streets, moved to the S.W. Corner of 8th and J Streets 32 years later (Ref: freepages.genealogy).
