Sacramento,CA - 1852 - Sacramento City Bank Checks :
Lot of 2 checks. 1) Dateline Shasta, June 18, 1852. No check no. listed. Made out to "self" for $20. Signed by R. Tevis. Tevis signature may be related to Lloyd Tevis, elected vice president and a director of Wells Fargo in 1870, president of Wells Fargo in 1872, and who served in that capacity until 1892. 2) Dateline Shasta, March 5, 1853. Check number blank. Signed by M.B. Snavely, payable to J.N. Brickland for $145.30. The original dateline on both checks was Sacramento City, which was lined out and Shasta was written in. Shasta's gold discovery came in the spring of 1849, sparking California's second god rush. It became a tent city of more than 500 persons by October. But Shasta had its problems. An old mule train was all that connected it with Sacramento, 188 miles to the south. The winter of 1849 was a winter that flooded Northern California, including Sacramento. Many sold what they had and left for safer ground. After this, Shasta became transportation conscious and became the transportation hub to the northwest. (Ref: ghosttowns.com)
