Beautifully made Pantry Box stamped underneath with the
Sabbathday Lake Trade Mark Shaker icon. Sabbathday Lake in
Maine, founded at the end of the 18th c., is now the only Shaker
community with a few residents who contin live in the main
house, in existence in the USA.
There are some old
inkstains
inside the pantry box, so it might have been used for writing
tools. In addition, there are four sets of small holes punched,
suggesting that the Box might have been used for transporting
warm cookies to church.
There is no lid, and perhaps there
never was one, because I do not see any sign of fading along the
outside rim.

There is a lovely bent wood, swivel handle for the box
which adds another 2" to the height of this lovely Shaker Pantry
Box.
