CENTURY. This early European iron halberd is likely of Swiss or possibly German origin. It appears to be on the original haft and measures just over 93" in length. The base of the haft is slightly rounded, and the head measures 53 1/2" overall. The top of the halberd has a 17" spear point with a crescent-shaped blade and downward turned rear spike. The blade measures 9 1/2" in length and approx. 7 1/4" to the center. The opposite spike measures 5" to the center. The supporting straps running down the sides are in two pieces and measure 32 3/8" from the top of the haft. There are six screws/rivets in the lower section of the straps and six screws/rivets in the upper section as well. CONDITION: the head and straps have a dark gray patina. The haft remains quite solid but shows numerous scuffs and scrapes throughout its length. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (02-23550/BF). $800-1,200.
