Outstanding oil on canvas interior barn scene shows a proud ram standing amongst six ewes and three lambs. Two are feeding from hay trough, five hens feed on floor, one pecking at corn cob. One rooster standing tall. Barn door is open and left side has two bales of wheat under a large opening revealing a New York landscape with house, mountains and trees. Signed lower left “Mrs. Susan C. Waters”. Back of canvas signed “Mrs. Susan C. Waters Bordertown, N.Y.”. Label affixed to stretcher “F. Weber & Co. Philadelphia, Pa”. Original deep gesso decorated gilt flower decorated frame with wide complex liner. Possibly one of the finest works known by this artist. PROVENANCE: First time to the market. REF: This painting is similar, but more complex, than lot 723 Sotheby’s sale 1/16/2003. Mrs. Waters was an itinerant painter painting mostly in New Jersey. She is best known as an animal painter and in particular, sheep. Seven pictures in the catalog of her works are listed having sheep in a barn. No. 76 may be this painting, since the signature and subject matter are the same. SIZE: 30” x 42”. CONDITION: Untouched, original condition. Needs cleaning. Very good. 9-94209
