William Lytle in charge. The unit immediately saw action in West Virginia, and was subsequently assigned as a guard for Rosecrans at Army of the Cumberland headquarters. It saw action at Chickamauga with Rosecrans. When Genl. Thomas assumed command, it was retained as headquarters guard, seeing action in the Atlanta campaign before its 3-year term expired.
