SUPERB PAINTING OF THE SHIP DORCHESTER OF THE

MERCHANTS & MINERS LINE OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND BY J. BROWN. An exceptionally fine painting of the ship Dorchester with a gold leaf frame measuring 39 1/4" x 29 1/4" and the sight size of the painting itself measuring 33" x 23". The painting depicts the Dorchester steaming through open ocean with sails in & smoke rising from the single stack. The American flag waves off the stern. A large, red, white & blue pennant flies from the aft mast that reads, “DORCHESTER”. The fore mast has a blue flag showing a central white triangle with the letters, “M & M CO”. This flag represents the company flag of Merchants & Miners Shipping out of Baltimore, Maryland. The painting is quite well done & appears to be a very fine representation of the ship with accurate features throughout attesting to the skill & maritime knowledge of the artist. The use of impasto in the clouds & the ocean are minimal but effective. The painting is signed in the lower right hand corner & appears to read, “J BROWN 89”. We could not locate information on this artist but perhaps a more in depth search could identify him. The Dorchester was built in Wilmington, Delaware for Merchants & Miners out of Baltimore. The 1,875 net ton ship was built of iron in 1888 & was 40/40 abeam. CONDITION: the painting was professionally relined but does appear to be on the original stretcher. The frame is old but not original to the painting. There are no apparent repairs or areas of inpainting. (02-16625/BF). $2,500-4,500.
