STUART ( Gilbert ). The history of Scotland, from the establishment of the Reformation, till the death of Queen Mary. In two volumes. Dublin : Printed for W. Gilbert, T. Walker, J. Beatty, R. Burton, J. Exshaw, P. Byrne, and J. Cash, 1782FIRST IRISH EDITION, pages (19), (1, blank), 489, (1, blank) : (23), (1, blank), 448, 2 vols, 8vo, original boards, uncut, the spines worn, one board loose, with remains of original manuscript labels, entirely uncut and mostly unopened, possibly a remainder binding, with the bookplate of the Ramsgate Monastery, Kent, in both volumes. First published at London in the same year, this proved to be one of Stuart's most successful books, thanks in part to his sympathetic portrait of Mary Queen of Scots, and was republished several times and translated into European languages. Having read the work, John Wesley recorded in his journal for 1786, that Stuart was "a writer indeed! as far above Dr. Robertson as Dr. Robertson is above [John] Oldmixon. He proves beyond all possibility of doubt that the charges against Queen Mary were totally groundless ; that she was ... one of the most blameless, yea, and the most pious women.” This Dublin printing is uncommon.ENGLISH PRE 1801; DUBLIN PRINTED; HISTORY; SCOTLAND; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
