Desirable pairing of flown 6 x 4 flags—the American flag and the state of Alabama—carried aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery for its inaugural flight on STS-41-D, affixed to a 20 x 16 mount alongside a presentation slip to Senator Jeremiah Denton, signed in ink by the full crew: Hank Hartsfield, Michael Coats, Judy Resnik, Mike Mullane, Steven Hawley, and Charles Walker. Four photographs from the mission are affixed above. In very good to fine condition, with overall warping to the mat and photos, and creasing to the presentation card; the flags are both fine and unaffected. Jeremiah Denton is best remembered as a naval aviator who was taken prisoner for eight years during the Vietnam War; in a televised propaganda interview, he famously blinked the word 'torture' in Morse code, confirming the terrible conditions for POWs to American intelligence services. He went on to serve for six years as a US senator from Alabama.
