BOXLOCK EJECTOR SHOTGUN BY "HEROLD" (FRANZ JAEGER). Cal. 16 Ga., 2 9/16". S# 6518. Bbl. 28 3/4" shoe lump, fitted w/ slightly raised matted concave game rib. Bbl. flats are stamped w/ pre WWI German nitro proofs. Sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Case hardened scallop backed boxlock action features non-automatic safety ("SICHER" in gold), pin type cocking indicators, crossbolt 3rd fastener, sideclips, & double triggers. Action is engraved w/ 70% coverage, nicely cut Germanic scroll w/ line & scroll borders surrounding a nicely detailed pair of flying ducks inlaid in gold on floorplate which is also engraved "HEROLD" trade mark name for Franz Jaeger. A floral burst around hinge pin screw has gold inlaid buds. The most striking part of this unusual shotgun are the exquisitely deep relief carved fences along w/ adjacent bbl. treatment. Carving is in oak leaf & acorn motif w/ scrolling oak leaves; acorns are inlaid in relief gold. This fine work transitions onto bbls. w/ 3/4" bands of relief acanthus interspersed w/ gold dots. Trigger guard is of horn. Well marbled, lightly figured European walnut horn capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14" over horn basket weave buttplate. Stock features small right hand shadow line cheekpiece. Inlet horn drop points w/ ivory dot accents, and closely spaced point pattern checkering on semi diamond grip. Matching splinter ejector forend w/ inlet horn tip has Deely release. MEASUREMENTS: BARRELS: Bore diameter: R .672 L .672. Restriction: R .020 (MOD) L .030 (IMOD). Min. Wall Thickness: R .029. L .030. STOCK: LOP: 14" DAC: 1 1/2". DAH: 2 1/2". Cast: Neutral. WEIGHT: 6 lbs. 1 oz. CONDITION: good to very fine as partially refinished. Bbls. retain nearly all of a very fine quality reblack, engraving remaining clear. Action retains 30-40% original case hardening color, quite strong where protected. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their original oil finish w/ numerous marks & dings. Checkering w/ moderate wear has not been recut. There is repair to horn at front of trigger guard bow. There is a lacquer repair to a ding on nose of comb. Two repaired minor cracks are on bottom of forend in front of iron & one in bbl. channel of right bbl & epoxy repaired chip in bbl. channel toward tip. Bores are very good to fine w/ some light scattered frosting toward breech ends. Evidence of 2-3 minor repaired dents, mostly in right bbl. Action is tight, bbls. are on face. Ejectors are slightly out of time. (20-2386/MGM35). CURIO. $2,000-3,500.
