343. STANLEY & LIVINGSTONE

“dr. livingston I presume?”
Scottish explorer and missionary David Livingstone (1813-1873) who discovered the Zambezi River and was the first white man to see Victoria Falls, hailed as the first to cross the entire African Continent from west to east. Considered lost and possibly dead, Henry M. Stanley (1841-1904), a British explorer and staff reporter for the New York Herald who had served in the CS Army, was sent to look for Livingstone in 1870. Over a year later he found the missing explorer in Tanzania, greeting him in the now famous, understated phrase, “Dr Livingstone, I presume?” Offered is a clipped signature, 5"x1½", boldly signed by Livingstone. Paper clip stain at top edge; pencil annotations on recto; light staining and uneven toning slightly affecting signature. Accompanied by an ALS, 1p, small 8vo, Parker House, Dec 20, 1872. On embossed stationery to William Bull, Stanley writes in full, “...In reply please accept the undersigned signature & believe me yours very truly...” Boldly penned and signed the year he uttered the immortal phrase forever linking him with the famous doctor. General light soiling and stain-ing; light pencil annotation beneath signature; mounting residue on verso; tipped at left corner to descriptive text. Overall VG.
