First edition, Stanley Publishing Company, 1889, illustrated with engravings, color plates and maps. A High Victorian gem from the Age of Exploration, the hard cover lavishly illustrated with red, silver and gilt title and images of Stanley, a man-eating lion, leopard, African village, the spine with a hunting party, the back blind-stamped with a foliate crest. Together with a large Victorian "Child`s Bible", profusely illustrated with woodcuts, the cover gilt-stamped with a kneeling, praying child and the name "Walter Mangels", gilt page ends. 2 pieces. "Stanley" with wear to edges of cover and spine, flyleaves loose and with nicks to edges of paper. Bible with cover and first few pages detached.
