87. [STANDING SOLDIER]

Ogallala Sioux chief. Imperial size cabinet photo 10¾"x13¾", attributed to Heyn, Omaha, NE, 1900, on mount. Heyn had earlier studied under Reinhart. Identified on plate. Light general soiling; water damage on small area of mount on verso of no affect; o/w in VG/Fine condition. Serving under Lt. William P. Clark, Chief of Scouts at Fort Robinson, NE, the Red Cloud Agency was moved in 1878 to Pine Ridge, SD, where Standing Soldier became part of the Indian Police that enforced the laws forbidding the “sun dance” and the “ghost dance” and any similar “religious” Indian ceremonies. Together with several other members of the Indian Police, he resigned from this service in 1890 when rumors started to go round that they might be used to arrest Sitting Bull.
