STALAG LUFT III WARNING SIGN AND BARBED WIRE
STALAG LUFT III WARNING SIGN AND BARBED WIRE
Enameled tin sign, 10" x 6", from an electrical fence at Stalag Luft III, along with a piece of barbed wire, approx. 17" long, from the same fence system. The sign bears the image of a skull and crossbones, with a red shock arrow through it to indicate the danger of electrocution. It also reads, in Polish: "Nie dotykac! Urzadzenie elektryczne!" ("Do not touch! Electric device!") The sign, chipped at the corners and is scratched is in otherwise good condition. Stalag Luft III was a German POW camp in Silesia, now western Poland, which was operated by the Luftwaffe. It held captured British and American airmen. It is best known for being the site of the massive breakout of 76 men, depicted in the film "The Great Escape". The camp was bulldozed at the end of the war, and these relics were excavated by Polish souvenir hunters in the 1950's.
