STALAG-LUFT III GREAT ESCAPE PRISONER'S DOG TAG
STALAG-LUFT III "GREAT ESCAPE" PRISONER'S DOG TAG
German-issue dog tag issued to a "kriegie", or inmate held at Stalag Luft III, the P.O.W. camp in Poland dedicated to the incarceration of Allied flyers. The aluminum tag, 2 1/2" x 1 5/8", is engraved: "STALAG LUFT 111 12665", which identifies the owner by his prisoner number. The three holes present are for stringing a leather cord or piece of string to allow the tag to be worn about the prisoner's neck. In good "dug" condition, recovered by locals at the site of the camp in the Fifties or early Sixties as the camp had been razed shortly after war's end. Of course, Stalag Luft II was immortalized in film in "The Great Escape". Provenance: The collection of the late Malcolm Smith, the long-time assistant secretary to the Battle of Britain Association; balance, The War Museum, New York.
