ST. NAZAIRE PRISONER-MADE SUBMARINE WALL PLAQUE
ST. NAZAIRE PRISONER-MADE SUBMARINE WALL PLAQUE
A brass half-hull model of a German U-boat, undoubtedly made by a U-boat crewman or yard employee being held by the French at the ex-German U-boat port of St. Nazaire. The model, 11" long and set onto a black wood plaque, shows the vessel's hull, conning tower, radio wires, and a hand-painted German naval ensign. A brass plaque at upper-left reads: "ST. NAZAIRE 1946". Fine condition. St. Nazaire was bypassed by the Allied advance following D-Day, and the port facilities would not surrender until the last day of the war. Many of the Germans holding out in the city remained imprisoned by the French until 1947, and in some cases, 1950. Provenance: TIME-LIFE Collection, The War Museum.
