Extremely rare pre-SSCA assay receipt: No. 3140 Memorandum of Gold Bullion deposited by J. M. Libby, December 17, 1856. Receipt measures 10 1/2 x 5 inches, printed with black ink on buff colored paper, printed by Excelsior Print, 151 Clay Street. weight before melting 51.25 oz., after melting 50.13, Fineness .869, Net value after all fees and other costs $892.54. Fine to Very Fine condition: typical folds and light foxing. Extremely rare, R 7. Over 300 Kellogg & Humbert gold ingots were recovered from the S.S. Central America. A number were also melted for commemorative gold coinage, retaining the original ingot "face plates." Very few of the Kellogg & Humbert assay receipts pre-date the SSCA.
