Exceptional! No. 9853: From the Assay Office of Blake & Co. (G. Blake, W.R. Waters) of 5252 J Street: Certificate of Gold deposited by D. O. Mills & Co. at Sacramento, Dec. 27th 1860 (1861 printed but a red ink "0" written over). Mixed dust: Weight before melting 110,70 oz. After melting 106.49 oz. Fineness .879, Value per oz. $18.17. Net amount after all costs and fees $1,928.50. Red pen used on a form of black ink on beige paper. Receipt is 8 x 7 1/2 inches, and is in very fine condition with typical "pocket" folds and foxing. R 7. The names of Forest Hill merchants Hardy and Kennedy are penciled in at bottom left. Blake is one of the five gold assayer ingots found on the SSCA. The Blake family of assayers is well documented in Rush for Gold (Holabird, 2008). Sacramento California Franklin Collection
