SPECTACULAR CDV OF DRUMMER JOHNNY CLEM "THE DRUMMER BOY OF SHILOH." Absolutely pristine 1863 view of celebrity Sergeant John Lincoln Clem by "Schwing & Rudd." Verso bears an ink inscription in Mickle's hand giving an interesting contemporary account of Clem's status and disposition. It reads, "Sarg't Johnny Clem. Shot a Rebel officer & was presented with a badge of honor by Genl. Rosecrans. Is now 12 years of age. Stays with Genl. Thomas at Dept. Hd. Qtrs." Clem is wearing the square cloth "Roll of Honor" badge in this rare variant. Also visible under magnification is what appears to be a silver medal with scalloped edges containing an unidentified photograph encased in celluloid? The orphan Clem joined the 22nd Michigan Infantry, attained celebrity status, and ultimately the rank of Major General living until 1937. A chapter in author Dennis Kesee's recent book Too Young To Die incorporates numerous Clem views and contains the most recent study of one of the 19th century's most photographed subjects. Accompanying the cdv is a fragile NY. Times newspaper clipping dated August 26, 1903 that recounts Clem's exploits, his career, and speculates on his longevity. Provenance: Mickle album.
