SPANISH MERCHANT NAVY FALSE FLAG
SPANISH MERCHANT NAVY "FALSE FLAG"
A 69" x 48" burlap "false flag" copy of a Spanish merchant navy ensign, separate red, white and yellow sections, marked with an "A" inside a circle, the year "1939" and the number "510" on the hoist. A Spanish galleon emblem in black appears near center in the center field. The flag, certainly not of typical marine quality, is heavily soiled and torn. Provenance: From the collection of the late Malcolm Smith, the long-time assistant secretary to the Battle of Britain Association; The War Museum, New York. This flag was intended to convince German raiders and U-boats that the their potential target was from neutral Spain and should not be attacked lest the ire of Franco's government be aroused. Rare.
