SPAIN, Madrid, gold bust ½ escudo, Ferdinand VI, 1758 JB, with private countermark LAC in monogram, rare, NGC VF details. Cal-564; KM-378; Fr-274. 1.57 grams. Contrasting sediment around details, a few minor marks, but best feature is the rare countermark, deeply impressed on the reverse, whose origin and meaning is unknown but can be traced to the early 1800s, now seen on a total of six coins from the mints of Madrid (½ escudos) and Bogotá (8 and 2 escudos), one of the latter significant as regulated for early U.S. circulation, raising the possibility that this countermark is actually the hallmark of an American goldsmith.
