SOUTH AFRICA: AE medal, 1901, -0, Anglo-Boer War Atrocities Medal, 33.6mm, Dutch and Spanish cavalry and infantry fighting in the Dutch War of Independence with concentric legends "It is Better to Fight for the Fatherland / 1568-1648, the Spaniards in the [Dutch] Provinces / Afrikaner (Boer) farmstead in flames, torched by the British Army with legend, "Thus are you Forced under an Enemy Peace/ the English in South Africa, 1899-1901", Unc, R. The British finally ended the protracted South African war by herding Boer women and children into what were officially called Concentration Camps, in which some 25,000 non-combatants died of crowding and disease while the British burned many of their homes. Although the burning alone is noted on this Dutch-made medal in 16th century style, South African collectors habitually call it the Concentration Camp medal.
