(SOUJOURNER TRUTH)
(1797 - 1883) Black American abolitionist born a slave, she became the first black woman to speak out against slavery and lectured throughout the East and Midwest. Once the slaves were emancipated, Truth went on to support woman's suffrage and equal treatment of blacks. Carte de visite photograph showing the aged lecturer in a near three quarter length pose, verso bearing the "Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1864, by SOJOURNER TRUTH, in the Clerk's Office, of the U.S. District Court, for the Eastern District of Michigan". Recto has her name printed on the bottom mount along with the quote "I sell the Shadow to Support the Substance". An excellent example of this elusive image. The albumen has excellent tone and clarity, with just a hint of age. A fantastic image, fine.

Estimate: $1,200 - 1,500.
